About Me
Alexandra Simpson is our Founder and Creative Director. She has had a passion for jewellery from a very young age and has been designing, making and selling her work in England since 2006.
Alexandra was short listed for two professional awards at Holts Academy which included one for Innovation, and in 2009 she was awarded “Coutts New Jeweller Award winner” as part of London Jewellery Week.
She graduated from Surrey University and studied jewellery design, techniques and business at Westminster, Cass and St Martin’s School of Art and Design.
Contemporary and romantic, Alexandra’s handmade jewellery has a delicate, graceful and sensual quality. Carving is her specialty: she hand carves using traditional tools in wax and metal, but also carves in glass and stone.
Alexandra’s belief in the importance of quality and balance is reflected in the design, composition and materials used in her jewellery: Sterling silver and 18 carat gold are intertwined with semi precious and precious stones. Nature and Art Nouveau inspire her elegant and intricate pieces.
Why a piece of Alexandra Simpson jewellery?
Alexandra is touched by beauty… ‘as a sunset touches the soul’ so a piece of Alexandra Simpson jewellery touches your heart. Each piece is handmade with love and attention to detail. She mainly uses 18ct gold and sterling silver intertwined healing gemstones and pearls.
These beautiful jewels have a delicate, romantic and feminine quality to them. Balance and quality too, are important, and Alexandra’s perfectionist nature ensures this.
Some pieces can have many hours, days and even months design time in them with lots of planning and thought, others are made in an impressionistic and playful way, evolving and adapting during the creative process. These processes have been developed over many years of trial and error and she continues to be led often by her materials.
Inspiration
Alexandra finds inspiration in natures many organic forms and is probably best known for her gorgeous flowers. Many collections have a little story or anecdote behind them. Fantasy and the feminine form have also held a fascination for her in stories, paintings and Art Nouveau jewellery which influence her work.
She feels spiritually inspired and particularly connected to angels. In fact she is also a qualified Angelic reiki healer and sometimes infuses her pieces with angelic reiki.
Background
Alexandra came to jewellery with an art background. In fact she studied Art at University, which, after her foundation in painting, saw her specialising in glass and printing. Here forming a love of colour and light.
She has come around again to colour and light not only in her use of gemstones but in using glass enamel on some of her jewellery. She has a natural gift in painting which she has plans for in the future. So, watch this space.
Experience
"I’ve had a passion for jewellery from a very young age and have been designing, making and selling my work in London since 2006
After graduating from Surrey University in Art I went on to study jewellery design, techniques and business at Westminster, Cass and St Martin’s School of Art and Design.
In 2008 I was short listed for two professional awards at Holts Academy, which included one for Innovation, and in 2009 was awarded “Coutts New Jeweller Award winner” as part of London Jewellery Week."
Techniques
Alexandra’s love of Art Nouveau has led her to specialise in carving natural forms. She particularly has a love for carving wax because of the detail that can be achieved in the final piece. She combines various techniques from fusing metal, organic granulation and wirework with her miniature sculptures to form exquisite and enchanting pieces of jewellery.
Alexandra is committed to her professional development and enjoys continuously learning and adding to her skill set. She is currently experimenting and wanting to learn more about different wax techniques for example Mitsuro Hikime and stone setting in the wax. …watch this space. She has been developing her experience and confidence in the use of enamels over the last few years which adds an extra dimension and colour to these wonderful pieces of jewellery.
