Collection: Birds and Bees

Alexandra's bee spirit necklace, ‘Humble bumble’, was another divinely timed commission. Just like the Ginkgo, Alexandra also wanted to make a bee piece of jewellery. She loves one of her competitors bees and there are so many other alternatives on the market she just didn’t want to copy or be influenced by them.

When Alexandra was approached to make two as leaving gifts at a nursery she jumped at the chance. She had been saving bees with sugar water at the time. Unfortunately, one bee didn’t make it and she asked for its spirit to go into her carving of the bee. She sat with the bee in front of her, with no preconceptions of what it was going to look like.

Looking at the outcome, its senses are more emphasised, so its eyes are much larger and its wings too, almost looking as though they are thrumming with movement. The details are still there with its little stinger, long proboscis, tiny legs and its round furry and stripy body.

In addition to these elements, on the back, are the all-seeing eye for protection, in a little diamond. A hollowed-out heart surrounds healing gemstones, all very symbolic.

The spiritual meaning of a bee is ‘Follow your dreams and you get to taste the elixir of life’. The heart representing your dreams and the gemstones the elixir of life.
